If you’ve ever received a package in the mail or sent a letter to a loved one, today is an important day to recognize! Every year on February 4th, we celebrate Thank a Mailman Day: a day to recognize and thank the workers who deliver important mail and packages day after day, through rain or shine, for six days a week. Here at Peachtree we love sending and receiving mail–especially if there are books involved–and we appreciate the wonderful people who deliver all our mail every day!

This year on Thank a Mailman Day, we have a very special mailman to recognize. Stanley is back and delivering mail to all of his friends in Stanley the Mailman!

Stanley gets up early to sort through the mail in his post office. Then he sets off through to town to deliver it all. Myrtle, Little Woo, and Charlie all receive exciting gifts and letters. But will everyone be happy with what’s in Stanley’s mailbag?

Author-illustrator William Bee brings us another wonderful little story with our favorite hamster Stanley. Stanley the Mailman is coming March 1st, and we can’t wait for everyone to share another day of fun and discovery with Stanley!

Supplies:

–   1 large box
–   Colored duct tape and/or hot glue
–   Construction paper and/or paint
–   4 Paper plates
–   2 Solo cups
–   Wide colored ribbon

1. First, cut off the bottom and top flaps of the box so that it fits over your child’s head.
2. Glue or tape two paper plates on either side of the box to make wheels.
3. Glue or tape your two Solo cups on the front of your box to make headlights.
4. Finally, cut two strips of ribbon and attach them to the front and back of the box to make straps. Measure them so that the box hangs from your child’s shoulders.
5. Give that car a custom paint job! You can finger-paint it, glue on construction paper patterns, or even make designs from your colored tape. Be creative!

Beep! Beep! You’re ready for the open road!

Somewhere between shaking off dreams and reconciling myself to reality, you know? Of course, the very first thought being the most inspired is a rare occurrence. Often it will be my fifth or–as it was today–my sixth thought that is the real gem.

For example…

My first thought on this lovely Georgia morning was something along the lines of: “Coffee.”

About fifteen minutes later (half-way through my cup of liquid inspiration) my second thought occurred: “It’s Friday.”

Slowly, a third: “Fridays…those are nice.”

They came more rapidly now: “Stanley the Hamster is nice.”

Aha! The genius, the brilliance, of the fifth!: “My blog friends would love Stanley.”

And finally the epiphany: “Stanley should definitely be this month’s #FreeBookFriday.”
