We know we’re not in Boston, but we’re excited for the privilege to celebrate this year’s NSTA together with you in this space! If now’s not the most perfect time to discuss the significance of science, then we don’t know when is.

Science and STEAM life are all about perseverance—inspired by failures to expand vision. We know you’re doing that right now while continuing to teach and exploring virtual learning solutions. We know your students are experiencing this while adapting to their new learning environments. We hope our award-winning books, authors, and illustrators can help inspire new ideas and wonder. Especially now.

Read on for new titles, messages from your favorite authors, book talks, and more!

“Looking for a Nature adventure for kids of all ages? Flap right over and find a perch!

Bird Count brings to life the longest running Citizen Science survey in the world—National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC).  As Ava takes her team’s tally in lush habitats ranging from farm fields and forests to wetlands and neighborhoods, her sights are set on seeing a rare prize, a raven.  Which bird will be your favorite among the flocks illustrated with accuracy and charm—and a touch of whimsy—by the talented Stephanie Fizer Coleman?

Birding tips gleaned from my more than 15 years on a CBC count team in Massachusetts enhance the story and will soon have you and your young birders ID-ing with confidence. Bring the scientists’ most important tools—your eyes and ears—and immerse yourself in the excitement of the count!” –Susan Edwards Richmond

Susan Edwards Richmond Signing Bird Count (Ages 4 – 8)

Susan Edwards Richmond teaches preschool on a farm and wildlife sanctuary in eastern Massachusetts. She earned her M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of California, Davis, and is the author of five collections of nature-based poetry for adults. She is happiest exploring natural habitats with her husband and two daughters, and learns the native birds wherever she travels. You can visit her website here.

“I hope you enjoy reading this book with your students. It describes how animals living in fields and deserts, wetlands and seashores survive hot, dry weather. I’ve created all kinds of educational resources that you might find useful. You can find them here.” –Melissa Stewart

Melissa Stewart Signing Beneath the Sun (Ages 4 – 8)

Melissa Stewart earned an undergraduate degree in Biology and a Masters in Science Journalism. She is the author of  180 or more science books written with passion and precision. She also travels as an educational consultant advocating for the pairing of fiction and nonfiction to order to naturally expose the full range of text structures, best practices for research and writing, and related topics for children attending school visits, as well as for the educators at professional conferences and workshops across the country. “Amphibians have incredibly diverse, action-packed adaptive strategies–and who’s even heard of a caecilian?? That whole secretive, fossorial/aquatic amphibian order was a surprise to me! Since I need to have a deep understanding of each cool science story to communicate it with the few words a poem affords, having such delightful subjects made my work on this collection extra fun. I hope your students will enjoy these poems and try some of my poetic sci-comm strategies (as well as humorously accurate drawing like Robert Meganck’s) to share their own amazing discoveries. And of course, I hope they’ll go outside and find evidence of these important critters in their own ecosystems! Thanks, NSTA, and science educators for the terrific work you do!” –Leslie Bulion

Leslie Bulion Signing Amphibian Acrobats (Ages 8 – 12)

Leslie Bulion is the author of several children’s books, including Uncharted Waters, The Universe of Fair, The Trouble With Rules, and Fatuma’s New Cloth, winner of the African Studies Association’s 2002 Children’s Africana Books. Her award-winning science poetry books are now available in paperback. She lives in Connecticut. You can visit her website here.

“Looking for an exciting way to introduce the 3 Laws of Motion to your students? Check out Save the Crash-test Dummies! Filled with fun four‐wheeled nuggets of history and explanations of how cars, and car crashes actually work, this STEM book appeals to lovers of all things that go and students who are interested in getting in under the hood and seeing how things work.” –Jennifer Swanson
