Farewell Fall 2014!

Thanks for following our Fall 2014 Blog Tour! It was a good three months, but all good things must come to an end. We hope that you discovered some great kid lit bloggers along the way and got a sense of our exciting season.

Let’s do a quick montage! Like they do in the movies!

In August we learned all about parrots, and learned a couple of football gambits from Jesse, Jay and Savannah.

In September Stanley had two full career changes! Pig and Small became lifelong friends! And Charlie Bumpers used desensitization techniques to overcome his Halloween fears!

We wrapped up in October with an animal parade, a skiing sock and pup, and a lifesaving dog.

That wraps it up for this season, but we’ve got exciting changes in store for Spring 2015 titles. In addition to reviews, we’ll also be showing blog tour followers story time ideas, crafts, flannel board patterns, discussion questions, and more extension activities! This week we will take a closer look at our Fred Bowen Sport Series with his latest middle grade title for Football fans, Double Reverse.

Jesse is experienced as a wide receiver – but can he play against type and help his new team as a quarterback?

The Franklin High Panthers need a new quarterback. Freshman Jesse Wagner knows the plays, but he feels he is too small to be QB material. Jesse’s brother Jay has a problem of his own: his college coach wants him to switch from quarterback to safety. The brothers agree on a deal: Jesse will try out for quarterback, and Jay will try playing safety. Meanwhile, Jesse and his teammates recruit an unlikely kicker for their team – a girl named Savannah.

Kirkus Reviews suggests this tale for the “reluctant reader who is captivated by football… There’s plenty of descriptive action on the field and even a few diagrams of different key plays to enhance the text…The simple sentences and basic vocabulary of this novel will be attractive to struggling readers.An apt choice to surprise a young football fan with the power of words.”

Story Time Snack: Touchdown Dip

Do you know what our favorite thing about football is?

The tackles? The fumbles? The fierce competition between teams?

Nah. THE FOOD!

We thought we’d share one of our favorite game-day snacks in honor of the release of Fred Bowen’s Double Reverse! We’ve even included some pictures to help you follow along.

So grab some friends (because the second best thing about football is the people you watch it with) and try this amazing Touchdown Dip!

(Keep reading to the end of this post to see how you can win a copy of Double Reverse!)

Here’s what you’ll need:

One container of whipped cream cheese (the softer kind it makes it easier to spread)
Salsa (about 2/3 to 3/4 of a jar)
Shredded Mexican cheese (8 oz.)
Nacho Chips
9 x 13 pan

Here’s what you do:

1. Layer the ingredients in the order of cream cheese, salsa, Mexican cheese

2. Heat until cheese is melted using either your microwave or oven (350º F for about 10 minutes)

3. Enjoy with nacho chips!

There you have it! Easy & delicious Touchdown Dip.
