One of the highlights of the children’s book publishing world is the awards ceremony that takes place every year at the American Library Association’s Midwinter meeting. This is where librarians select their top awards, reflected in those shiny medallions you see on some of your favorite books for young readers. These awards include, among others, the Sibert Award, the Printz Award, and—the most well-known—the Coretta Scott King, Newbery, and Caldecott Awards.

This year, we at Peachtree were blown away when we got the early morning call that our beloved Going Down Home with Daddy, illustrated by Daniel Minter and written by Kelly Starling Lyons, was named a 2020 Caldecott Honor Book.

Going Down Home with Daddy is the story of a young boy finding his place in his family and learning how valuable family is to one another. It’s also a joyful celebration of the Black family reunion culture and family history.

This is the first Caldecott Honor for Peachtree as well as for Daniel Minter, and to say we are excited is an understatement. Going Down Home with Daddy also has local and symbolic significance for everyone involved, which adds to the weight of this extraordinary honor.

“Daniel Minter’s own Georgia roots and Kelly Starling Lyons’ beautiful text inspired Daniel’s gorgeous and meaningful artwork,” said Margaret Quinlin, Peachtree president and publisher. “This is a story of family love and of honoring and celebrating our roots, so it seems especially fitting and extra-special to all of us at Peachtree to call it our first Caldecott Honor.”

Minter’s background contributed greatly to the award-winning work he produced, and his and Kelly’s shared experiences added to its meaning.

“I am honored to have worked on this book with Kelly Starling Lyons,” said Minter. “Her deeply personal story resonated with me in such a way that I immediately knew this story was also mine. I am profoundly moved to see my work recognized with this Caldecott Honor. Knowing that people are able to connect with the subtleties in the artwork affirms how interconnected we all are.”

Kelly’s text made several Peaches cry upon reading it for the first time, but when Daniel’s art first arrived at the Peachtree offices back in 2018, we knew that the pairing would ultimately produce something special and lasting.

“When I learned that Daniel won the Caldecott Honor for our book, I was filled with pride,” said Lyons. “His art brought the story to life in such powerful ways. Emotional depth. Layers of meaning. Symbolism. He put his heart into every page.”

Huge congratulations to Daniel Minter as well as Kelly Starling Lyons. We couldn’t think of a more deserving book for this honor. The celebration began here in Atlanta early on Monday morning and shows no end in sight. Cheers!

And when the cover for King & Kayla and the Case of the Missing Dog Treats flashed on the projector screen with “Geisel Honor Book” as the header, we cheered in Atlanta along with the rest of the enthusiastic attendees in Denver and the hundreds of others watching remotely.

“It is wonderfully satisfying for all of us at Peachtree to receive our first Geisel honor,” said Peachtree President and Publisher Margaret Quinlin. “We are most grateful to the committee for recognizing the work of Dori Butler and Nancy Meyers.”

The Geisel Award, named after famous cartoonist and world-renowned author Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, “is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.” Through his imaginative, memorable, and unique picture books, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the hearts of many young children and made them lasting readers; it goes without saying, being recognized for providing the same kind of reading experiences as Dr. Seuss had provided and still continues to provide for children today is beyond gratifying.

While talking with author Dori Hillestad Butler after the awards announcement, she recalled why she became a writer: “My mission statement is all about turning non-readers into readers! There is nothing more satisfying to me than to get an e-mail or letter from a child who says, ‘I didn’t like to read until I read your Do You Know the Monkey Man.’ or ‘Your King and Kayla and the Case of the Missing Dog Treats is the first book I read all by myself!’ The Geisel Honor award plays right into that mission statement.”

King & Kayla and the Case of the Missing Dog Treats follows lovable golden retriever King and his human Kayla as they search for the missing peanut butter treats Kayla made for their friend Jillian’s new puppy Thor. The first book in the King & Kayla series, King & Kayla and the Case of the Missing Dog Treats offers transitioning and newly independent readers a chance to practice their sleuthing abilities through gathering facts, thinking analytically, and practicing their reasoning and deductive skills, all while building on vocabulary and visual perception. The fact that these engaging stories are told from King’s perspective with fun and humorous full-color illustrations throughout only adds to the enjoyment.

“The King & Kayla series has been one of those delightful experiences that has been fun and energizing at every stage,” said Kathy Landwehr, Peachtree Publishers vice president and associate publisher. “Dori Butler and Nancy Meyers have created endearing characters that inspire us to think carefully, pay attention, and experience joy in everything we do. We look forward to more adventures!”

With three titles in the King & Kayla series already out, the fourth available March 2018, and more on the way, readers can continue to experience and enjoy this endearing series for years to come.

We are so excited to share that Madeline Finn and the Library Dog has won the Children’s Choice Book Award in the Kindergarten to Second Grade Book of the Year category! The Children’s Choice Book Award is the only national book awards program where the winners are selected by kids.

We spoke to debut author-illustrator Lisa Papp about this wonderful honor, so read on for an exclusive interview with her about her book and its impact in the lives of so many children.

Congratulations on the Children’s Choice Book Award! Did you ever think Madeline Finn and the Library Dog would take off like this?

Thank you so much—I haven’t stopped smiling since I heard the news! I didn’t know Madeline Finn would touch so many people. I only knew that I loved creating her character, and the world she and Bonnie share. I didn’t like reading out loud when I was little, and I’ve always loved animals, so Madeline and Bonnie are both very dear to me. They are expressions of things I love and understand.

In your opinion, what about Madeline Finn resonates with kid readers?

I think it’s the vulnerability. Everyone knows what it’s like to want something, and not be able to get it—no matter how hard you try. There’s an honesty in Madeline Finn’s struggle. And in Bonnie, there’s complete acceptance. When Madeline Finn meets Bonnie, none of her quirks or complications matter. Bonnie loves her just the way she is. I think there’s a great comfort in that.

What would Madeline Finn and Bonnie have to say to all the kids who voted for the book?

Madeline Finn: Thank you for picking my story! Even though it’s kind of embarrassing when I mess up reading, I found out it’s okay when you have a good friend. I hope your library has a Bonnie too. And a Mrs. Dimple. But if they don’t, I’ll share mine with you.

Bonnie: “W O O F !” (I believe in you. Thank you for trusting me.)

We just spoke with first-time author/illustrator Bethan Woollvin across the pond in the U.K., and as you can imagine, she’s over the moon about her debut picture book being named a 2016 New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book. Read on for an exclusive interview with her, Peachtree editor Kathy Landwehr, and a little surprise news!

Congratulations! How does it feel to have your first-ever picture book honored as a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book?

Bethan: Totally amazed! I haven’t been able to stop smiling since I found out! The New York Times is so influential, so I feel very honored for Little Red to have been chosen as a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book!

How did you celebrate?

Bethan: First thing was a glass of wine, followed by a few more… Since then, I have made a celebratory print of Little Red to commemorate the award! I’m also coming to New York for the occasion, so I’m very excited for that. I hope to eat my weight in waffles.

What drew you to the story of Little Red Riding Hood?

Bethan: “Little Red Riding Hood” was among many fairytales I read as a child, and one that always stood out to me because it was so dark. The only problem was I couldn’t relate to Little Red Riding Hood. She has so often been portrayed as a helpless naive child who confused her own grandmother with a wolf! Then, if this wasn’t bad enough, she then (unsatisfyingly) gets saved, along with her grandmother, by a heroic woodcutter (who just happened to be wandering around the forest, looking for a damsel in distress…).

It wasn’t until I was studying at university that I had the chance to revisit “Little Red Riding Hood.” I entered the Macmillan Children’s Book Competition and started working on the story, but in the way I wanted it to be told.

What inspired your unique spin on the tale?

Bethan: I decided very early on in my character development for Little Red that she was going to be just as cunning as the wolf, which I think feeds into the “twist” of the book. Instead of being a victim, I decided that Little Red needed to be strong and brave enough for the woodcutter not to exist in this version.

Why do you think your version has resonated with so many readers?

Bethan: I’d like to think it’s because it appeals to both its target audience—children—as well as the adults who read it to them.

I illustrated Little Red purposefully androgynous, meaning all of the younger readers would be able to associate with Little Red’s figure. Both girls and boys could easily invest in the character and the story. As for the adults, retellings of stories they’d have heard in the own youth will inevitably feel familiar but also potentially predictable. So while tapping into their nostalgia, the dark and hopefully humorous twist has kept the book dynamic.

What’s next for you?

Bethan: Well, I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that there are more books on the way! Aside from that, I’m just working hard to be involved in as many exhibitions, projects, and galleries as possible!

Little Red caused quite a stir when the manuscript made its way to Peachtree’s top editorial decision-makers in Atlanta. Its unique, subversive voice and bold black, white, and red artwork made us all reconsider what we think of when we think of “the perfect Peachtree book.”

Kathy: I was immediately drawn to the striking, stylish artwork. I loved the feminist message. And the more time I spent with the book, the more I enjoyed the way Bethan played with and built on the original story.

What about her artwork captured your attention?

Kathy: Her artwork is striking—I know, I said that already. It also has a lot of very humorous detail, not all of which is immediately obvious, at least to me. It is a book that benefits from repeated readings.

Kathy: We have a strong backlist collection of folk and fairy tale retellings. We also have a strong backlist collection of picture books with feisty girls who take control of their lives. Little Red should fit in just great with both of those groups and have a long life ahead.

Before we let you go, we hear you have some exciting news on the Bethan Woollvin front.

Kathy: That’s right! We just—literally late last week—signed Bethan Woollvin for her retelling of “Rapunzel.” It’s scheduled for release in Fall 2017. In it, you’ll find a well-known fairy tale reimagined with Bethan’s now-signature artwork and girl-power twist. It’s a lot of fun, and we can’t wait for readers everywhere to see it.

Thanks all! And congratulations again!

This week marks the end of the month, and the end of the month here at Peachtree always includes a night when the book-smart, analytical, and generally intelligent (geeky) members of the Peachtree Publishers team (Peaches) leave our purple halls, gather at the nearby taqueria, and talk about books. This month, the books on the table (literally and figuratively) were the 2016 Caldecott Honor Books.

If you don’t already know the titles, the Honor Books were Trombone Shorty illustrated by BrianCollier and written by Troy Andrews; Waiting illustrated and written by Kevin Henkes; Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer, Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement illustrated by Ekua Holmes and written by Carole Boston Weatherford; and finally The Last Stop on Market Street illustrated by Christian Robinson and written by Matt de la Peňa. We all took some time to flip through these lovely books one more time, being careful to keep them away from the guacamole and salsa, and then the talk started and didn’t stop for an hour and a half.

For some of the younger Peaches at the table, we started off by remembering what the criteria for the Caldecott medal are. Our beloved Awards Coordinator (among other titles), Courtney, briefly explained some of the factors and requirements to provide some context for our discussion (and if you’re curious, check out the official criteria and terms here). There was a brief lull as our taco orders were taken, but then we dug into the books themselves.

Trombone Shorty didn’t take much time to discuss as there was little debate—we all loved it, and we were all ready to take a trip to New Orleans. The vivid colors and images of a picture book were a great backdrop for the fun and inspiring true story of Troy Andrews. Awards and critiques aside, we all enjoyed learning about the childhood and influences of the talented musician and author.

On the other hand, every time we thought we’d laid it to rest, our conversation about Waiting bubbled up again. When Vicky, one of our editors, confessed that she’d thought long and hard about the possibility of a deeper philosophical meaning behind the little book, the gears immediately started churning in everyone else’s heads as we tried to think of something posh and intelligent to say. Unfortunately, we had no “eureka” moment, got back to our tacos, and declared that we liked the gentle and friendly illustrations that contrasted with the bright and loud books surrounding it. Our parting thought was a curiosity to see how a child would react to the five little windowsill friends.

The art in Voice of Freedom received favorite status from a few of us, and we spent some time flipping through to find our favorite spreads to share with each other. In particular, we discussed how the book combined a classic approach with the separation of art and text on many of the pages, and yet the art itself was so fresh and vibrant and really not traditional at all. Although we spent a fair amount of time on the art in voice, we also loved that the text did not shy away from sharing the realities and suffering of the era.

Medal, didn’t spur as much talk because its various awards had already sparked conversations over the last several weeks, and we’d all become very familiar with it. When looking at the art of all four books, however, we did particularly enjoy the textures that were in each illustration.

We were pleased with the diversified range of authors and books that were represented among the honored titles, and, as always, it was fun to see a few new names in the mix.

“Why would a children’s book writer decline to read her first picture book to children?” I’ve been asked this question several times since Peachtree released Zayde Comes to Live (illustrated by Kristina Swarner) in October. As the author of eighteen other novels or chapter books for young readers—Giving Up the Ghost is the most recent—I have always been happy to talk about or read from any of them at school visits or libraries. With the publication of my picture book, however, I share a sensitive topic—death and the afterlife—with a tender-hearted audience. For this reason, I think Zayde Comes to Live is best introduced to young listeners by parents and educators who know and love them best.

As a former hospice volunteer who cared for my dying mother in our home, I am aware of the fact that young children may be at different stages, developmentally, than older readers. Beyond that, some may be facing illness themselves or the impending death of loved ones. Others may be extremely fearful, reactive or excitable. Still others may be just healing from a recent loss. Can I, the author, anticipate how Zayde Comes to Live might affect each young listener, despite its sensitivity, glowing reviews, and honors? No. I can’t. And I don’t believe it is my place to initiate this intimate and difficult conversation.

For this reason, I have elected to introduce my picture book to adult audiences with a Power Point presentation, “GOOD GRIEF: How to Talk to A Child about Death,” which concludes with a reading of Zayde Comes to Live. In this talk, I share how I—a person who was always terrified of death—came to write two children’s books on the subject, as well as offer specific ideas about how to talk to children about death. Were it not for my mother’s devastating late stage cancer diagnosis in 1997, I would never have written Giving Up the Ghost (a suspense novel for ages 10-14) or Zayde Comes to Live (for ages 5-9). I would not have undergone hospice volunteer training, in part to conquer my own fears, as well as to serve others. Nor would I have met and cared for an amazing man at the end of his life who became an inspiration for Zayde, the character. My patient was Catholic, however, not Jewish.

The instinct to tell my story through Rachel, a young Jewish girl, came from several sources. The first was a hospice rabbi in Arizona who shared his experience that Jewish hospice patients have a more difficult time at the end of life than patients with other religious beliefs. I could relate to what he said: We Jews do tend to focus on Mitzvah—doing good deeds—and on the Here-and-Now, not the Hereafter. Most of us don’t even know whether Jews believe in an afterlife and, if so, what it’s called.

As one who never knew how to respond to well-meaning friends of other faiths, I thought, “If only children learned early on that many people believe different things about death

–and that’s okay–perhaps they wouldn’t be so fearful at the end of their lives.” I hoped to tell a compelling story that would give Jewish children a specific belief system, while at the same time providing hope and healing to all children that a loved one’s spirit will live on through love and memories. The hospice philosophy that people are not dying, but rather living until the moment they die, provides a backdrop and an impetus for making every moment of life count. It also suggested my title, which can be understood on several levels.

My greatest challenge was to avoid being didactic and to let Rachel’s character propel the action. As a novelist, I was conscious of the need to “write spare” with honesty and grace and to filter the story through a much younger character’s heart, mind, and words.

I am grateful that Peachtree did not regard Zayde Comes to Live as a book only for Jewish children, but rather for all children. A recent Parents’ Choice Recommended Award seems to validate that editorial decision. The publisher’s inspired selection of Kristina Swarner as Zayde’s illustrator expanded and transformed Rachel’s story into so much more than my original vision. Kristina’s exquisite watercolor-and-linoleum-block images of Heaven, Paradise, and Olam Ha-Ba capture these unknowable mysteries in ways that will surely soothe readers young and old alike. And her expression of love between Rachel and Zayde on every page shows rather than tells what mere words cannot. Zayde Comes to Live has been truly blessed by this partnership with Kristina Swarner; she shares equally in whatever Good might come its way.

Though my mother never lived to see either of my Peachtree books published, she flouted her doctor’s prognosis by living eight-and-a-half years instead of two. Just as she planted a seed for Zaydein the beginning, she also seems to have an unseen hand in the “fruits” of its publication. I can’t help but feel that her loving spirit has been guiding Zayde’s warm welcome in this world from that other world, Olam Ha-Ba.

Kristina Swarner, illustrator of Zayde Comes to Live, was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about her illustrations! Welcome, Kristina!

I’ve made illustrated books ever since I was very young. One of my grandmothers used to make little books and illustrated letters for me, and the other had a house full of old illustrated children’s books– I think books are part of me.

I usually work in a combination of printmaking, drawing, and watercolor. I also enjoy painting with oils and acrylics. I don’t really have a favorite medium, but I always love the surprise of lifting the paper off the plate when I’m making prints.

I’d describe the art in Zayde as warm and intimate. I was thinking of the way memories exist in your head as random pictures of moments, and the memories I have of my grandfathers, whom I was close to.

It’s been described as whimsical, dreamlike, peaceful, Chagall-like, and sensitive. To me it’s always changing–I’m always trying to get it to look like what’s in my head, and it usually comes out pretty differently.
