Gnu and Shrew

Gnu and Shrew
by Danny Schnitzlein
Illustrated by Anca Sandu

One day, Gnu hears about a cave across the river that’s filled with diamonds. Shrew is intrigued, but all Gnu wants to do is daydream about the treasure and dismiss Shrew’s many ideas for how to cross the river and safely acquire the diamonds. While Gnu spends his time dreaming instead of doing, proposing idea after idea that he’ll never attempt himself, Shrew works tirelessly trying to make those dreams a reality. These very opposite friends both want to reach the cave full of diamonds, but can Gnu and Shrew work together long enough to actually make it across the river?

Author Danny Schnitzlein’s entertaining spin on “The Ant and the Grasshopper” emphasizes the importance of dreamers and doers, teaching readers that you do need both in order to be successful. Anca Sandu’s colorful illustrations perfectly complement the humorous text for an engaging new read that will satisfy young STEAM fans and little inventors.

“This is not the usual story of industry triumphing over sloth….it’s refreshing to see a fable in which a generous spirit mitigates the usual ‘gotcha’ ending.” —Publishers Weekly

“Schnitzlein keeps readers aware of the yin and yang of the characters’ relationship without judging them, employing a pleasing pattern of language and syntax—and a few unexpected twists…. Fun, a few surprises, and something to ponder.”—Kirkus Reviews
