While You Were Sleeping

by John Butler

Take a trip through the animal world in this exquisitely illustrated counting book.

While young Daisy sleeps, animals play and swim and fly. When she wakes up, her mother tells her about each animal in turn.

John Butler’s lyrical text and vivid pictures make this a special book for sharing. Children can learn to count while they discover what animals do while we’re asleep, and adults will be equally enchanted by the luminous beauty of Butler’s brilliant, detailed illustrations.

Reviews

“Luxuriantly illustrated…. Butler’s soothing, restrained text reads like a lullaby, but his full-bleed, double-spread animals portraits are the stuff of wide-eyed wonder, especially when he renders his subjects in close-up.” ―Publishers Weekly

“This delightful board book takes prereaders and beginning readers on a midnight adventure from their own backyards to an exotic jungle and places in between as animals leap, jump, and cavort across the sturdy pages…. The realistic, softly colored illustrations give an accurate portrayal of animals in their natural habitats as they show kids some of the amazing things that go on in the animal world when they are sleeping.” ―Booklist

“It’s an imaginative bedtime book that makes for fun reading.” ―5 Minutes for Books

“A nice read-aloud-at-bedtime book or read-anywhere book. Sized perfectly for the young child to carry about and treasure. Beautifully illustrated with drawings of a variety of wildlife from the tiniest mouse to dolphins, penguins, and elephants.” ―Chat with Vera
